Hovering in the shadows comes Apse's Spirit, a mesmerizing album where the shrouded world of Gothic gloom meets the outer stratosphere of space rock. Although laced with vocals and haunted by moody melodies, the 11 tracks within are less songs than instrumentals interconnected by their melodies, rhythms, and thick atmospheres. Apse hit on enough touchstones to rouse familiarity within fans of instrumental post-rock, psychedelia, or even industrial rock, but they never completely settle into one or the other on Spirit. Even calling them post-rock isn't a perfect fit after all, the album does have vocals, as sparingly used as they may be. Now reissued by ATP Recordings two years after its original release on Acuarela Discos, Spirit is a moody and mostly instrumental affair, but it's strikingly different than any similar act running today this is something much more haunted and sparse.
