Jon Dolan. They may be terrible paleontologists, but on The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, Alice in Chains prove that grunge fossils can still churn out slithery menace. It's the band's second LP since the 2002 death of singer Layne Staley, and though new vocalist William DuVall doesn't have his predecessor's talent for shaping Seattle sludge into molten-dread anthems, founder Jerry Cantrell's expressively torpid guitar steps up to become its own kind of lead voice, chugging mordantly on Hollow and wailing like My Bloody Valentine. The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Alice In Chains, released on May 28, 2013. It is Alice in Chains' second album since their 2005 reunion, following the 2009 release Black Gives Way To Blue. About the album, guitarist Jerry Cantrell said to Revolver magazine: I don't think you'll be surprised by anything you hear. It's us. But it's also really unique. It's got all the elements of any record we've put out, but it's unlike any record we've put out. Alternative Metal Grunge Stoner Metal. Alice In Chains. While all the things you would expect from Alice in Chains - sludgy guitars, haunting melodies, dark lyrics - are on the disc, the band shows they can still put a fresh spin on their sound. Voices' also leads perfectly into the album's title track, 'The Devil Put Dinosaurs,' which features mesmerizing guitar work that draws in the listener, while lyrically the track takes on the intolerance that can come with differing viewpoints. The big task for Alice in Chains on their 2009 comeback Black Gives Way to Blue was to prove they could carry on battered and bruised, missing Layne Staley but still in touch with their core. They had to demonstrate the band had a reason to exist, and Black Gives Way to Blue achieved this goal, paving the way for another record just like it. Enter The Devil Put the Dinosaurs Here, a record that is pretty close to identical to Black Gives Way to Blue in its sound, attack, and feel. Alice in Chains were one of the most successful grunge acts of the 1990s, but they were also one of the most derided. They started life as a glam-derived metal band, for which they were dismissed by the same people who embraced Seattles other big glam-derived metal band, Mother Love Bone. Despite its very 1990s red jewel case and its trollable title, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is actually a solid mainstream rock album: more inventive than it needs to be, and less self-congratulatory in its intense introspection. Thats due to new vocalist William DuVall, who approximates Staley's blared sneer but actually has more expressive range

Jugore
As strong as 'Black Gives Way to Blue', this album is equally impressive and equally powerful. Vocally, J. Cantrell dominates the album - his double- and triple-tracked lines echoing the greatest moments of 'Sap' and 'Jar of Flies', all while invoking some of the more tormented tones of 'Dirt' across some of the heavier pieces.

Sadly, W. Duvall takes a lesser role across the album, but the tracks he does contribute to are brilliant again, and when he's employed to produce those glissandos and more acrobatic pieces, the album only benefits further. And when the two vocalists mix (as in 'Pretty Done' or 'Phantom Limb'), the real brilliance of the album is revealed.

Guitar tones are exceptional, with dirt, power and clarity all present - the riffs passed through are simple, tasty, powerful and sometimes brilliantly simple. They are also listenable and downright catchy.

There is no weak point on the album, however trivial, and the production (while less bombastic than BGWTB) is nevertheless punchy and full, with the acoustic tracks holding their own within the album and alongside 'Jar of Flies' - just listen to 'Choke', or 'Voices' if you doubt it.

The band have shown that there is a real post-Staley future, and J. Cantrell's song-writing, meshed with Duvall's adaptable talents (he's an accomplished guitarist, too) only benefit from great production and a rhythm section that nail it every time.

Excellent album with strong compositions, dynamics, and a convincing release that proves Alice in Chains have so much more to give. If BGWTB proved their new line, this album concretes it and confirms a bright second life for Alice in Chains.
