If you're familiar with Alias at all, chances are it's because of the super-sappy ballad "More Than Words Can Say", which was a huge radio hit in 1990. Alias was a band made up of members of Heart (the ones whose last names weren't Wilson) and Sheriff, including vocalist Freddy Curci, whose smooth voice was made for this kind of music. Sheriff of course had a huge hit a year earlier with (you guessed it) a super-sappy ballad called "When I'm With You".

Even though their most famous song was a ballad, the Alias debut definitely had some rocking moments. Album opener "Say What I Wanna Say" had some great rock hooks, as did the catchy "Haunted Heart." For the most part though, this is a pretty tame AOR kind of album. It's very smooth, very polished, and very radio-friendly. Hence the big ballad. Still, if you're a melodic rock fan this album is pretty hard to resist. Curci's vocal performance alone is worth the price of admission.

Despite the popularity of "More Than Words Can Say," Alias didn't weather the storm of the `90s. This was their only album (though the unreleased Never Say Never finally say the light of day in 2009). If you enjoy bands like Valentine, RTZ, The Storm, the Elefante-era Kansas albums, and of course Journey and REO Speedwagon, you're going to love Alias. It's about as good an example of the early `90s AOR sound as you're likely to find.
