Though it was released in 2008, Sparks of Ancient Light sounds very much like a '70s Al Stewart record that happens to be lacking the more elaborate features of '70s rock music production. And that's a good thing, allowing what have always been Stewart's principal strengths - pleasant haunting melodies, mellifluous vocals, accomplished folk guitar work, and literate, historical-minded lyrics - to stand at the forefront, undiminished by extraneous arrangements. It's great to see him in such fine form, doing what he really does best on his new album. I've been an Al Stewart fan since I first heard his Past Present and Future album in the early 1970's. I still have my vinyl copies of all his 70's albums. His latest studio CD, Sparks of Ancient Light, is excellent. It has the great guitar work, great lyrics and the very high quality of songwriting that made long time Al Stewart fans like myself become fans in the first place and remain fans - in my case for over 30 actually, nearly 40 years
