One of the prominent elements throughout African Head Charges discography has been the ethnomusicology influence. On Songs Of Praise this is even more pronounced, featuring religious chants set to an African dub backdrop of hand percussion, with a mighty sonic and great musicianship. A significant record both for African Head Charge and On-U Sound, originally released in 1990. Double LP including all the tracks from the original vinyl release plus bonus tracks previously only available on CD. Includes a download card for the full audio plus double-sided poster insert with excerpts from a new interview with band leader Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah. The group was formed by percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah, and featured a revolving cast of members, including Prisoner, Nick Plytas, Crocodile, Junior Moses, Sunny Akpan, Skip McDonald, and Jah Wobble. The group released most of its albums on Adrian Sherwood's label, On-U Sound. Another great African Head Charge tune off their under-appreciated album Akwaaba. African Head Charge. Im surprised that this LP has such a low rating. Found for $3 in a used bin of cheap (rightly so) dancehall promos. Noticed it's on Acid Jazz (haven't thought about them in years) and a bit later release than AHC's "classic" Lp's, so I thought it might be a bit watered down.

I was wrong. This is solid AHC / UK style nyabinghi. Sounds very comparable to their hyped LP's which I notice are selling for pretty pennies sometimes. It has the same heavy compressed bass, crisp guitars and tight production, tribal chants and samples, Nyabinghi drumming, etcetera that makes their early stuff sound totally unique and powerful proto futuristic reggae dance music. Some of the same personnel. Definitely the same lovely positive vibe that you can elevate to.

Wouldn't necesarily rate it a 5, but since I've heard their other stuff soooo much, I would likely rate it higher than that stuff...4 and a half? Sounds amazingly current for a mid nineties reggae album. Maybe benefits a little from better digital recording at the time compared to the 80's.

Still, considering how many legendary reggae stars floundered in this era due to increasingly cheesy production and the perils of the industry, it's really nice to find a group who did it right.
