This morning on the tube on the way in to work, I was listening to this: Sizzle Featuring La Rom Baker* - Love Is All Around, this: King Errisson - Manhattan Love Song / L. A. Bound, and this: MFSB - Love Is The Message I am now happy to state that I believe "Dancing Queen" to be one of my least favourite records ever. Pointless on 12", it's the same as the album version. The arrangement is poor, and ironically it's far too slow to actually dance to - perhaps it should be called "Tortoise Queen". The recording sounds tinny and trebly and listening to it makes me cringe. In comparison with the three records I mention above, this record is truly one of the most unlistenable and undanceable pieces of music ever written. Hopelessly overplayed, it's a real blot on the landscape in the history of disco. Rated 1/5.

All fair criticisms, but I've come to look at it like ABBA was primarily a pop band, a vocal group that merely appropriated the dance sound of the day. The promotional clip (video) says it all: this song's fans were primarily children, ordinary Europeans, not "serious" disco patrons. The stacked, Schlageresque harmonies of "Dancing Queen" were for the radio, the roller rinks, and plastic turntables. The lyrics seal the deal. It's a novelty song, just some rhymes set to a pleasant tune, an ambling melody that serves mainly just to fill the space between the soaring choruses. On that level, it's a huge success.The 12" exists merely to give the DJs a loud, durable cut, not an exclusive long version.
