A Hawk and a Hacksaw is an American folk duo from Albuquerque, New Mexico, currently signed to L. The band consists of accordionist Jeremy Barnes, who was previously the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel and Bablicon, and violinist Heather Trost. The music is inspired by Eastern European, Turkish and Balkan traditions, and is mostly instrumental. They have released six albums and have toured internationally. This album is a very great piece of experimental electronic music. “A Hawk And A Hacksaw”, translated in five languages on back cover, means European traditional music, with accordion and piano, in a wonderful cacophony and harmonies cohabitation. Nowhere you will listen to real cats and ducks singing with their drunken old farmer. I’m astounded by the quantity of sounds and images created in my mind when I listen to it. Recorded in a farm in Saumur (France), this release can amaze the listener every track. From the outset, “Maremaillette” is introduced at cockcrow, listener has to wake up. The end of “Cotton Woods” is a herd charge with ducks and goose noise (and also a trumpet player panic). The end of “To Pine In Time” gets the impression of a deep-sea diver, breathing in his diving suit. Mix violin, trumpet, percussion, clarinet, accordion, piano, jaw harp, marimba, organs, melodica, a Pakistani flute, baby birds, a gaggle of geese, a chicken and a grey cat, and you will have this very funny strange project.
