Incredible 10/10 album from these guys. I had heard a lot about them, but all suspicions were put to rest when I got this LP a few years ago.

The most impressive thing about this album, is the wide variety of style and performance that they display in each track. Clearly they were tasked with covering a few "traditional" songs for this LP, but rest assured that each track is modernised in it's own way.

1. A solid take on a traditional song giving the guitarist and organ player the opportunity to have a lot of fun, all the while the drummer is banging out rapid 16th notes broken up by hat chokes. Sets the tone for the rest of the album and shows that the group are high-energy.

2. More serious war related song. The performance flows incredibly well between the airy chords on the organ, the chilling backing vocals, and two fairly clean stereo-panned guitars. The mono version issued on EPs and flexi-disks is even more enchanting, if that's your thing.

3. A love song of sorts, misleading the listener into thinking nothing interesting will happen. Features a two part fuzzed out guitar/organ solo that definitely makes the track border into rock territory.

4. Another traditional "upbeat" song with fuzzed guitar and chord stabs throughout. Features an instrumental section with the horns, and a brief drum break.

5. What? Seriously, the introduction is sure to catch everyone off guard. Triplet pattern song with guitar impov. and tasteful piano styling.

7. Loud Ukrainian soul. A brilliant example of funky soviet drumming at it's finest, doubled up snares, hat chokes and off-beat kicks. The piano follows the drums in an amazing way, and the guitarist makes heavy use of his wah pedal throughout the entire song. The melody and lyrics are also catchy as hell. Features instrumental section with horns.

8. Very catchy Tukhmanov composition covered here with prominent rhythm guitar, trippy stereo percussion elements, and a distorted guitar that butts in whenever it gets a chance. Kinda light-hearted, but rock throughout.

9. I love the premise of this song, convincing the listener that it's not all bad up north. The bass holds this track together, and it really isn't meant to be anything more than a catchy, easy-to-sing-along-to song. Very nice organ and guitar backing throughout.

10. They rightfully chose this song to end the album. Primarily a vocal song with plenty of harmony, tasteful melodies from the guitar, piano, and backing vocals throughout.

Conclusion: One of the best examples of "pop" to come out of the early 70s, but also an enjoyable listen from start to finish due to the unending creativity displayed in the arrangements.
